SAVE Electronics designed a tailored Surge Filter Protection system for Shake Shack, protecting the power that feeds its POS server and its lighting.

The challenge

Recurring power surges at several Shake Shack locations were frequently taking out HVAC systems, POS equipment and lighting. The disruptions were frustrating and costly.

What we did

Shake Shack’s facilities director, who had seen our earlier work at P.F. Chang’s, asked Tim Boyd for help. Our team reviewed the issues and designed a Surge Filter Protection system around Shake Shack’s needs.

Approximately 80% of power surges and transient spikes originate inside the building, not from lightning or the utility. Protection at the main power feed alone would not solve the problem, so we targeted the electrical panels that supply power to critical systems, including the panels that power the POS server and the lighting control panels.

The result

Shake Shack has seen no further issues. Protecting the lighting control panels also extended the life of its lighting approximately 3 to 4 times.

Since implementing SAVE Electronics’ solution, we have seen no issues as expected. As a bonus, by installing protection on our lighting control panels, we’ve extended the life of our lighting approximately 3-4 times.

We were experiencing recurring issues with power surges at several of our Shake Shack locations, which were frequently taking out our HVAC systems, POS equipment, and lighting. These disruptions were not only frustrating but also costly.

Based on previous interaction / success with SAVE Electronics at P.F. Chang’s I reached out to Tim Boyd at SAVE Electronics for assistance.

Tim and his team looked at our issues and designed a tailored Surge Filter Protection system specifically for our needs. He took the time to explain that approximately 80% of power surges and transient spikes originate from within the building—not from external sources like lightning or utility power issues, which only account for about 20%.

He also made it clear that simply installing surge protection at the main power feed wouldn’t be enough to solve the problem. Instead, we needed to target the electrical panels that supply power to our critical systems. Following his recommendation, we installed the Surge Filter Protection units on these key panels.

Since implementing SAVE Electronics’ solution, we have seen no issues as expected. As a bonus, by installing protection on our lighting control panels, we’ve extended the life of our lighting approximately 3-4 times.

I highly recommend speaking with SAVE Electronics if you're experiencing similar problems at your locations. Tim and his team were very responsive to our needs and their expert guidance and support is well substantiated.

Respectfully,
John Stephens, Director, Facilities, Shake Shack
